Family Values

What are family values? When politicians leap to the podium and begin talking about restoring family values, which values are they talking about? Family values can mean many things to different people, and so leaving family values in the hands of politicians means exactly what? Some attribute family values to the basic biblical principles while others focus family values on discipline and the responsibility factors of becoming an adult. Many people claim that today’s parents are too soft on kids, and that society has become over sensitive to children. Some believe that spanking your child in public is a parental right while others believe that spanking is abusive and teaches fear and violence. Who is right? Some interpret the meaning of family values to be the value of family, as in traditional families with a mother and a father and the family dog. Others interpret family values to mean the value of family, the value of providing children a warm safe place to learn and to grow, to return everyday from the world and know they are loved and learn to be responsible adults. By interpreting family values as a definition of family, of what others believe is the "right kind" of family, who are we hurting? We certainly aren’t hurting the adults of the family. When we point to a single parent family, an inter-racial family, a homosexual family, or any family that someone’s imagination decided wasn’t the "proper" family, and we abandon their right to be considered a family, it’s the children who get hurt. The children’s self esteem and identity in the world suffers, and the children learn to hate each other for the decisions their parents have made. Family values are supposed to be out the quality of the family. That means principles of love, tolerance, acceptance, responsibility, safety, and the family’s ability to do the right thing while out in the world and under their own roof. Family values lay in the hands of every individual family, and whether or not they exercise their ability to give to the world positive and effective influence. Every day people have the power to teach their children positive influence or negative influence. Every day children have the option to either be positive forces or negative forces. Families with strong family values are those who motivate their children to be positive forces in the world, and who lead them by example. When politician make promises of restoring family values, how exactly is it that they propose to get into the head of every parent and affect them enough to teach their children to be stronger, better, and kinder? By telling them they aren’t the "proper" type of family? Family values are up to each individual family, not the political system. Family values are free choice, and while there may be those who oppose the values that some families possess, there simply isn’t room for the open criticism of families that defy the nuclear familial definition. The instant a judgment is determined that creates a "right family" and a "wrong family," opposition heats up, defiance and cause oriented protesting begins, and people get so lost in defending their right to be a family that the basic code of family values becomes lost on both sides. Attacking people for loving their children because they do not fit a political frame work is in fact ridiculous. Political decisions and political values tend to appeal to only one sector of the community. By allowing the government to decide what the correct moral code for family structure really is, we are handing our basic freedoms right back into the hands of governmental policies. Our freedom of choice, freedom of speech, and freedom to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are all placed in dreadful jeopardy the instant politicians define a family. There is no denying that there is a crisis in the United States when it comes to family structure. But the crisis is not one that is intermingled with white Christian politics. We have one half of the country too busy trying to make enough money to make ends meet and provide food for their children to be home to discipline their kids, and we have the other half recruiting the help of reality television to teach them how to discipline their own children because they don’t know how. Society has become so sensitive to over disciplining their children that parents are being beaten up by their 5 year olds, and doing nothing about it. I am certainly not advocating beating children. Nor am I one to claim that spanking solves disciplinary problems. But I do believe that family values comes down to teaching children right from wrong, no matter how many parents are in the household, what color they are, what their income level is, or how many of each gender there are. Discipline is a form of teaching. Teaching children right from wrong and the obvious consequences that go along with doing right and wrong is sorely lacking in our society. That is an issue parents, not the government, need to address.

Canadian Diamond Mines

Canada is a big player in the international diamond industry, and ranked amongst the top three diamond producers in the world (in terms of value) in 2007. The many plus points of Canadian diamonds are that they are of exceptional quality and 'clean', i.e., they are not being used to finance terror, war and weapons, as is being done in countries such as Sierra Leone and Angola. Diamonds were first discovered in Canada in 1991 at Point Lake near Lac de Gras in the Northwest Territories. Since then, several mines have opened. They include: Ekati Diamond Mine Canada's first diamond mine is the Ekati diamond mine, which is 300 kilometers northeast of Yellowknife. This mine that opened in 1998 is primarily owned by Australian mining conglomerate BHP Billiton, who own an 80% share. The minority share of 20& is owned by Charles Fipke and Stewart Blusson (10% each), who are the geologists who discovered the mines. This mine has yielded 40 million carats (8,000 kg / 17,636 lb) of diamonds out of six open pits, between 1998 and 2008. Diavik Diamond Mine The Diavik diamond mine is about 186 miles north of Yellowknife and 100 kilometers southeast of Ekati. The construction of this mine began in 2001 and it opened in 2003. Since then, it has greatly boosted the regions economy, and provided large scale employment opportunities. The mine is jointly owned by the Harry Winston Diamond Corporation and Diavik Diamond Mines Inc., a subsidiary of Rio Tinto Group. On an average it produces 8 million carats (1600 kg) of diamonds each year. Jericho Diamond Mine Another famous Canadian diamond mine is called Jericho, and is located at about 400 km northeast of Yellowknife. It was Nunavut's first diamond mine when it opened in August 2006, and is owned by the Toronto-based Tahera Diamond Corporation. Estimates place the mines production capacity at 375,000 carats (75 kg) a year. The mine is accessible only by road via which all equipment is brought in. Snap Lake Diamond Mine The Snap Lake diamond mine is owned by De Beers, and is located in the Northwest Territories, about 220 kilometers northeast of Yellowknife. The project was completed and became functional in 2007, and is supposed to be Canada's first completely underground diamond mine. De Beers expects to produce 1.1 million tonnes (1.2 million short tons) annually with 1.2 carats (240 mg) per metric ton. Gahcho Kue Diamond Mine Project The Gahcho Kue Diamond Project is still in the formative stages. Construction is likely to begin in 2010 and the mine should be in use by 2012. It will be located in the Northwest Territories and is a joint-venture between Mountain Province Diamonds, De Beers Canada and Camphor Ventures. Victor Diamond Mine Project The Victor Diamond Mine Project is also in the planning stages. It is located in the James Bay Lowlands of Northern Ontario, approximately 90 km west of the coastal community of Attawapiskat. The mine is owned by De Beers and construction of the mine began in February 2006. According to estimates, Canada will continue to be a diamond supplier to reckon with, as Canadian diamond mines are expected to keep producing for the next 18 years. Not only that, mines such as Ekati, Diavik, Jericho and Snap Lake are producing some of the best diamonds in the world. The future is also likely to see many more diamond mines dot the territory of Canada.

North Korea Fires Missiles, Continues to Antagonize the World

North Korea, again defying U.N. resolutions and drawing the ire of the global community, fired seven ballistic missiles into the waters off its east coast on Saturday. Coming on July 4, America’s Independence Day, seemed an intentional ploy by North Korea, whose military exercise was confirmed by South Korea. The missiles fired Saturday reportedly flew just over 250 miles and landed in the waters between the Korean peninsula and Japan, according to reports from the South. Officials in Tokyo called the launches a "serious act of provocation" and other countries roundly condemned the launch as well. There was no comment from President Obama on the matter, though some staffers noted that there likely would be a muted reaction to the launch in order to avoid giving any undue attention to Pyongyang. The missile launch is merely the latest in a continuing affront to the rest of the world by North Korea. Ignoring the fact that their country is not actually capable of such an attack, North Korean officials promised a "thousand-fold" military strike against the U.S. if provoked. Experts speaking on the matter largely felt that North Korea is "flexing its muscles" by continually defying the U.N. Said Daniel Pinkston, an analyst for the International Crisis Group, "I think it's a demonstration of their defiance and rejection of the U.N. Security Council Resolution 1874, for one thing, and to demonstrate their military power capabilities to any potential adversaries." Thus far, the U.S., its allies and other major players in the global community have merely threatened North Korea for defying them, with no specific action taken and, apparently, with none planned to quell the regional temper tantrums that are coming in the form of ineffectual missile launches.

Origin of the Japanese People

The traditional characters that make up the name 'Japan' actually translate as 'sun-origin'. Thus, the epithet, 'Land of the Rising Sun'. The island nation is an archipelago that comprises over 3,000 islands. Honshū, Kyūshū, Shikoku and Hokkaidō are the four largest islands, accounting for over 95% of Japan's total land area. The region is generally mountainous and the highest peak, Mount Fuji, is steeped in a history of volcanic activity. The capital city of Tokyo is 'de facto' and the largest metropolitan in the world! Archaeologists have unearthed proof that the islands were inhabited as early as the Upper Paleolithic period. Origin of the Japanese People Research reveals that the archipelago of Japan was mentioned in Chinese history texts, dating back to the first century A.D. The island nation was consistently influenced by outside forces who meandered their way to Asia, via the Pacific. The Japanese people, traditionally referred to as 'Nipponjin' are members of a predominant ethnic group. The group includes ethnic groups such as the Yamato, Ainu and Ryukyuans. Recent research on the ethnicity, displayed by the Japanese people, reveals that there is a strong genetic similarity among many populations in Asia. The fraction of extant male lineages in Japan mainly arises out of the Y-chromosome patrilines that crossed over from the Asian mainland. The resultant genetic admixture was a characteristic of the Jōmon period. The 'dual structure model' of Japanese genetics proposed in 1991 determines that most modern Japanese lineages are rooted in the Jōmon civilization and the early migrants of the Yayoi period. The Jōmon people are believed to have migrated to the Japanese Archipelago during the Palaeolithic period. Thus, the genetic similarity between Japanese people and those of the Yi, Hani and Dai cultures of Asia stays established. The population of migrants increased during the Neolithic period. Various Asian civilizations, including the Ryukyuan and Ainu people are believed to have extensively inhabited Kyūshū, Shikoku, Honshū, Okinawa and Hokkaido. This theory is supported by the mitochondrial DNA comparisons made with fossilized remains of the Jōmon and medieval Ainu people found in the region. A parallel theory states that the origin of the Japanese people lies in northeast Asia, as a result of a mass migration to Japan more than 30,000 years ago. Archaeological evidence reveals that the archipelago was inhabited throughout the Stone Age. The Paleolithic period was characterized by a land bridge to Asia and groups of nomadic hunter-gatherers who meandered borders towards Japan from Siberia, Kamchatka and East Asia. Much of this history is gathered from the tools and pottery excavated. Evidence of inhabitation by the Jōmon people during the Upper Paleolithic period (14th millennium BCE) also offers an insight into the culture of the subsequent Mesolithic hunter-gatherers, who initiated the primitive rice-growing agricultural practices still observed in rural China. The origin of the Japanese people is as intriguing and interesting as the culture synonymous with the region today. Migrations from North and Central Asia and resultant Ainu and Nivkhs populations that thrive to this day continue to flaunt a unique genetic make-up and affinities with diverse regional populations. Distinct genetic links on chromosome patterns and archaeological data offer enough evidence of the commonalities between linked cultures and people. The Japanese people continue to influence world culture and heritage with refined calligraphy, Haiku, sculpture, performing arts and the resilience of people who have chromosomes as weathered as the Earth itself!

Hip Hop Clothing Gear

Ini Kamoze sure became a hot stepper with this chartbusting track in the ’90s. ‘Here comes the hotstepper’ also saw itself being played at all major fashion shows and this was the time supermodels were labeled as the hot steppers during the ’90s. Hip hop songs have always been known to influence people at large when it came to sporting the latest fashions and trends. Hip hop dance is actually a very informal dance and it allows the dancer to move with a lot of freedom incorporating his/her own attitude into the steps. Hip hop dance refers to mainly street dance styles. It is primarily danced to hip hop/rap music or it may have evolved as a part of the hip hop culture. Break dance was first associated with hip hop. Many of the new styles of hip hop dancing have become very popular with the MTV generation of today. Think hip hop and you can always recall rappers wearing cool jackets and baggy low waist jeans with sporty trucker caps. Svelte ladies with braided hairstyles wearing tight micro minis and bright Tees also dominate the scene even today. Hip hop fashion has seen many evolutions from the olden time till date. Hip hop clothes in the late ’70s and mid ’80s: Baggy pants, oversized athletic jerseys, expensive sneakers were sort of a uniform for all the fans of the hip hop culture. Although hip-hop is the musical outgrowth of urban African-American culture, it soon traveled across the globe. Brands started associating itself with the hip hop culture. Bright tracksuits, leather bomber jackets and sneakers were now being manufactured by big brands in the business. It was not only the clothing but also the accessories that gained a lot of prominence. Bling was considered ‘in’. Men wore huge necklaces, chains, rings and bulky belts where as the women adorned huge and heavy earrings with metallic belts. Loads of bling was worn with loads of attitude. Hip hop clothing in the late ’80s to early ’90s: Hip hop was also categorized with vivid hairstyles and looks by this era. Different types of braided hairdos and dreadlocks dominated the scene at that time. Neon colored clothing and even neon shoelace was flaunted by leading hip hop groups. MC Hammer popularized the blousy pants and it resulted in them being a common item in the corridors of colleges. There was even a trend of wearing ones clothes backward. Silver and gold jewelry gained prominence during this era. Hip hop clothing post mid 1990s: Rap being popular by now, it took on a new look with the trend of ‘Gangsta’ rap catching on amongst the hip hop fanatics. Branded baseball caps, plaid shirts and outfits that resembled the prison gear caught on amongst the people like wildfire. Low waist pants actually originated from the gangsters who wore this clothing in prison. Lots of tattoos and bandannas also gained impetus in terms of hip hop clothing. Hip hop clothing as seen today: Despite all the changes and transitions, the main elements for the male hip hop fashionistas today, remain baggy pants , polo shirts and gold/platinum chains. The feet should be clad in huge boots and sneakers and caps should be worn to complete the look. (Preferably worn the opposite way) Large T-Shirts are also standard street wear today. Now, there is a marked difference between the male and female fashion scene in hip hop. The women who originally adopted the ‘tough-guy’ look, now sport feminine hip hop gear. The base often remains the same, the pants are slimmer, the skirts-shorter and are often combined with leggings and boots. The glam look can never be complete without some loud make up, a touch of lip-gloss and women oozing sensuality instead of the tomboy style of dressing. Earlier, groups like Salt ‘n’ Pepa made a mark with their bold videos and overt dressing. Cornrows with colorful beads, chunky, beaded jewelry and tying a bandanna around one’s thigh also remains to be a part of hip hop clothing gear. Today, there are many brands that cater to the growing market for hip hop clothing gear. Of course, whether one wears a branded jacket with a non-branded baggy pant, the entire look can never be complete unless you manage to season it with oodles of attitude combined with some snazzy head spins on the floor. This is definitely the true flavor of hip hop. Common hip hop gear:
Baggy sweatshirts/ T-shirts
Baggy jeans or Cargos (Low waist)
Loud/bright colors
Tight fitting/flared short denim skirt
Leggings
Colorful bandannas
Bling Jewelry
Large Ornamental Belts
Singlets worn with T-shirts
Sneakers or big boots
